Grammar Games: Constructor™ helps students learn to identify both parts of speech and parts of a sentence. Game Plans define what types of sentences are generated and what questions are asked. Some pre-defined game plans come with the application, but an unlimited number of tailored plans can be created to focus on specific areas.

The sentence options and question types cover both parts of speech and parts of a sentence. The complete list of options available are defined here.

Sentence Options

The following sentence options control the sentences that are generated by Constructor.

  • Possessive Nouns
    When the Possessive Nouns sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have possessive nouns in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with possessive nouns will not be used.

  • Concrete Nouns
    When the Concrete Nouns Only sentence option is selected, Constructor will select sentences that only have concrete nouns. Concrete nouns are nouns that you can actually see and touch. This option can make the nouns easier for younger players to identify.

  • Personal Pronouns
    When the Personal Pronouns sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have personal pronouns in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with personal pronouns will not be used.

  • Subjective Pronouns
    When the Subjective Pronouns sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have subjective pronouns in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with subjective pronouns will not be used.

  • Objective Pronouns
    When the Objective Pronouns sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have objective pronouns in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with objective pronouns will not be used.

  • Possessive Pronouns
    When the Possessive Pronouns sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have possessive pronouns in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with possessive pronouns will not be used.

  • Relative Pronouns
    When the Relative Pronouns sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have relative pronouns in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with relative pronouns will not be used.

  • Reflexive/Intensive Pronouns
    When the Reflexive/Intensive Pronouns sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have reflexive or intensive pronouns in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with reflexive or intensive pronouns will not be used.

  • Demonstrative Pronouns
    When the Demonstrative Pronouns sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have demonstrative pronouns in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with demonstrative pronouns will not be used.

  • Indefinite Pronouns
    When the Indefinite Pronouns sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have indefinite pronouns in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with indefinite pronouns will not be used.

  • Interrogative Pronouns
    When the Interrogative Pronouns sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have interrogative pronouns in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with interrogative pronouns will not be used.

  • Helping Verbs
    When the Helping Verbs sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have helping verbs in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with helping verbs will not be used.

  • Phrasal Verbs
    When the Phrasal Verbs sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have phrasal verbs in them. Phrasal verbs are verbs that are made up of more than one word, such as: "He looked up the address in the phonebook." If this option is not selected, sentences with phrasal verbs will not be used.

  • Adverbs
    When the Adverbs sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have adverbs in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with adverbs will not be used.

  • Non-Article Adjectives
    When the Non-Article Adjectives sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have adjectives that are not articles. Articles are also classified as adjectives, but these are always allowed. If this option is not selected, sentences with adjectives that are not articles will not be used.

  • Phrasal Prepositions
    When the Phrasal Prepositions sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have phrasal prepositions in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with phrasal prepositions will not be used.

  • Coordinating Conjunctions
    When the Coordinating Conjunctions sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have coordinating conjunctions in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with coordinating conjunctions will not be used.

  • Subordinating Conjunctions
    When the Subordinating Conjunctions sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have subordinating conjunctions in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with subordinating conjunctions will not be used.

  • Correlative Conjunctions
    When the Correlative Conjunctions sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have correlative conjunctions in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with correlative conjunctions will not be used.

  • Phrasal Conjunctions
    When the Phrasal Conjunctions sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have phrasal conjunctions in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with phrasal conjunctions will not be used.

  • Interjections
    When the Interjections sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have interjections in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with interjections will not be used.

  • Compound Subject
    When the Compound Subject sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have compound subjects in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with compound subjects will not be used.

  • Compound Predicate
    When the Compound Predicate sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have compound predicates in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with compound predicates will not be used.

  • Direct Object
    When the Direct Object sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have direct objects in them.

    If this option is not selected, sentences with direct objects will not be used. This can be helpful, for example, if you only want to focus on sentences that have predicate nominatives or predicate adjectives, or if you want to focus on intransitive verbs.

  • Compound Direct Object
    When the Compound Direct Object sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have compound direct objects in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with compound direct objects will not be used.

  • Indirect Object
    When the Indirect Object sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have indirect objects in them.

    If this option is not selected, sentences with indirect objects will not be used. This can be helpful, for example, if you want to focus on sentences that have direct objects, but not indirect objects. Keep in mind that sentences with indirect objects must also contain direct objects. If the Direct Object sentence option is not selected, sentences with indirect objects will never be used, even if this option is selected.

  • Compound Indirect Object
    When the Compound Indirect Object sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have compound indirect objects in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with compound indirect objects will not be used.

  • Predicate Nominative
    When the Predicate Nominative sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have predicate nominatives in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with predicate nominatives will not be used. This can be useful, for example, if you want to focus only on sentences that have predicate adjectives or direct objects.

  • Predicate Adjective
    When the Predicate Adjective sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have predicate adjectives in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with predicate adjectives will not be used. This can be useful, for example, if you want to focus only on sentences that have predicate nominatives or direct objects.

  • Noun Object Complement
    When the Noun Object Complement sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have noun object complements in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with noun object complements will not be used.

  • Adjective Object Complement
    When the Adjective Object Complement sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have adjective object complements in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with adjective object complements will not be used.

  • Noun of Address
    When the Noun of Address sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have nouns of address in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with nouns of address will not be used.

  • Appositive
    When the Appositives sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have appositives in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with appositives will not be used.

  • Adjective Prepositional Phrase
    When the Adjective Prepositional Phrase sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have prepositional phrases that function as adjectives. To allow any type of prepositional phrase in the sentence, you must also select the Adverb Prepositional Phrase sentence option.

    If this option is not selected, adjective prepositional phrases will not be used. If the Adverb Prepositional Phrase sentence option is also not selected, then no prepositional phrases will be used in the sentences.

  • Adverb Prepositional Phrase
    When the Adverb Prepositional Phrase sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have prepositional phrases that function as adverbs. To allow any type of prepositional phrase in the sentence, you must also select the Adjective Prepositional Phrase sentence option.

    If this option is not selected, adverb prepositional phrases will not be used. If the Adjective Prepositional Phrase sentence option is also not selected, then no prepositional phrases will be used in the sentences.

  • Adjective Infinitive
    When the Adjective Infinitive sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have infinitives that function as adjectives. To allow any type of infinitives in the sentence, you must also select the Adverb and Noun Infinitive options. If this option is not selected, adjective infinitives will not be used. If the Adverb and Noun Infinitive sentence options are also not selected, then no infinitives will be used in the sentences.

    Note that sentences with infinitives will not be used when asking questions related to parts of speech. This is because with those questions, we do not distinguish between the part of speech of the word (i.e., a verb) vs. the function of the infinitive (e.g., an adjective). Thus, if only questions related to parts of speech are selected, this option is ignored.

  • Adverb Infinitive
    When the Adverb Infinitive sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have infinitives that function as adverbs. To allow any type of infinitives in the sentence, you must also select the Adjective and Noun Infinitive options. If this option is not selected, adverb infinitives will not be used. If the Adjective and Noun Infinitive sentence options are also not selected, then no infinitives will be used in the sentences.

    Note that sentences with infinitives will not be used when asking questions related to parts of speech. This is because with those questions, we do not distinguish between the part of speech of the word (i.e., a verb) vs. the function of the infinitive (e.g., an adverb).   • Noun Infinitive
    When the Noun Infinitive sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have infinitives that function as nouns. To allow any type of infinitives in the sentence, you must also select the Adjective and Adverb Infinitive options. If this option is not selected, noun infinitives will not be used. If the Adjective and Adverb Infinitive sentence options are also not selected, then no infinitives will be used in the sentences.

    Note that sentences with infinitives will not be used when asking questions related to parts of speech.   • Infinitive Phrase
    When the Infinitive Phrase sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have infinitive phrases. The types of infinitive phrases allowed will be determined by the Adjective, Adverb, and Noun Infinitive sentence options. At least one of these options must also be selected to allow infinitive phrases. If this option is not selected, infinitive phrases will not be used.

  • Adverb Noun Phrase
    When the Adverb Noun Phrase sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have adverb noun phrases in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with adverb noun phrases will not be used.

  • Gerund
    When the Gerund sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have gerunds in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with gerunds will not be used.

    Note that sentences with gerunds will not be used when asking questions related to parts of speech. This is because with those questions, we do not distinguish between the part of speech of the word (i.e., a verb) vs. the function of the word (i.e., a noun). Thus, if only questions related to parts of speech are selected, this option is ignored.

  • Gerund Phrase
    When the Gerund Phrase sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have gerund phrases in them. Note that the Gerund sentence option must also be selected. If this option is not selected, sentences with gerund phrases will not be used.

  • Participle
    When the Participle sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have participles in them. If this option is not selected, sentences with participles will not be used.

  • Participial Phrase
    When the Participial Phrase sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have participial phrases in them. Note that the Participle sentence option must also be selected. If this option is not selected, sentences with participial phrases will not be used.

  • Declarative Sentence
    When the Declarative sentence option is selected, Constructor will use declarative sentences. If this option is not selected, declarative sentences will not be used. At least one of the sentence type options (Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, or Exclamatory) must be selected.

  • Interrogative Sentence
    When the Interrogative sentence option is selected, Constructor will use interrogative sentences. If this option is not selected, interrogative sentences will not be used. At least one of the sentence type options (Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, or Exclamatory) must be selected.

  • Imperative Sentence
    When the Imperative sentence option is selected, Constructor will use imperative sentences. If this option is not selected, imperative sentences will not be used. At least one of the sentence type options (Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, or Exclamatory) must be selected.

  • Exclamatory Sentence
    When the Exclamatory sentence option is selected, Constructor will use exclamatory sentences. If this option is not selected, exclamatory sentences will not be used. At least one of the sentence type options (Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, or Exclamatory) must be selected.

  • Simple Sentence
    When the Simple sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow simple sentences. If this option is not selected, simple sentences will not be used. This can be helpful, for example, if you want to focus only on compound or complex sentences. At least one of the sentence structure options (Simple, Compound, Complex, or Compound/Complex) must be selected.

  • Compound Sentence
    When the Compound sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow compound sentences. If this option is not selected, compound sentences will not be used. This can be helpful, for example, if you only want to focus on simple sentences or complex sentences. At least one of the sentence structure options (Simple, Compound, Complex, or Compound/Complex) must be selected.

  • Complex Sentence
    When the Complex sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow complex sentences. If this option is not selected, complex sentences will not be used. This can be helpful, for example, if you only want to focus on simple sentences or compound sentences. At least one of the sentence structure options (Simple, Compound, Complex, or Compound/Complex) must be selected.

  • Compound/Complex Sentence
    When the Compound/Complex sentence option is selected, Constructor will use compound/ complex sentences. If this option is not selected, compound/ complex sentences will not be used. This can be helpful, for example, if you only want to focus on simple sentences or on compound or complex sentences. At least one of the sentence structure options (Simple, Compound, Complex, or Compound/Complex) must be selected.

  • Adjective Dependent Clause
    When the Adjective Dependent sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have dependent clauses that function as adjectives.

    If the Complex or Compound/Complex sentence options are selected, but none of the specific type of dependent clause options are selected, then any type of dependent clause will be allow. If any of these types are selected, however, then only the selected types will be allowed. This can be helpful, for example, if you only want to focus on sentences with dependent clauses that function with a specific role.

  • Adverb Dependent Clause
    When the Adverb Dependent sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have dependent clauses that function as adverbs.

    If the Complex or Compound/Complex sentence options are selected, but none of the specific type of dependent clause options are selected, then any type of dependent clause will be allow. If any of these types are selected, however, then only the selected types will be allowed. This can be helpful, for example, if you only want to focus on sentences with dependent clauses that function with a specific role.

  • Noun Dependent Clause
    When the Noun Dependent sentence option is selected, Constructor will allow sentences that have dependent clauses that function as nouns.

    If the Complex or Compound/Complex sentence options are selected, but none of the specific type of dependent clause options are selected, then any type of dependent clause will be allow. If any of these types are selected, however, then only the selected types will be allowed. This can be helpful, for example, if you only want to focus on sentences with dependent clauses that function with a specific role.

Question Types

The following question types control the questions that will be asked about the sentences that Constructor generates.

  • Nouns
    When the Nouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any nouns in the sentence, but it will not ask you to distinguish between the different types of nouns. If any of the other more specific noun question types are also selected, Constructor will sometimes ask you to distinguish between the specific types of nouns and sometimes not.

  • Possessive Nouns
    When the Possessive Nouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any possessive nouns in the sentence.

  • Common vs. Proper Nouns
    When the Common vs. Proper Nouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify and distinguish between common and proper nouns in the sentence.

  • Singular vs. Plural Nouns
    When the Singular vs. Plural Nouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify and distinguish between singular and plural nouns in the sentence.

  • Pronouns
    If the Pronouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any pronouns in the sentence, but it will not ask you to distinguish between the different types of pronouns.

    If any of the other more specific pronoun question types are also selected, Constructor will sometimes ask you to distinguish between the specific types of pronouns and sometimes not.

  • Personal Pronouns
    When the Personal Pronouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any personal pronouns in the sentence. These include subjective, objective, possessive, and intensive or reflexive pronouns.

    If any of the specific personal pronoun types are also selected, Constructor will sometimes ask you to identify the personal pronouns in general, and sometimes ask you to identify the more specific types.

  • Subjective Pronouns
    When the Subjective Pronouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any subjective pronouns in the sentence.

  • Objective Pronouns
    When the Objective Pronouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any objective pronouns in the sentence.

  • Possessive Pronouns
    When the Possessive Pronouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any possessive pronouns in the sentence.

  • Relative Pronouns
    When the Relative Pronouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any relative pronouns in the sentence.

    Keep in mind that relative pronouns are only used with dependent clauses, so for relative pronouns to be used, one of the sentence options allowing dependent clauses must be selected. These options include Complex Sentences, Compound/ Complex Sentences, or any of the Dependent Clause options.

  • Reflexive and Intensive Pronouns
    When the Reflexive and Intensive Pronouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any reflexive or intensive pronouns in the sentence.

  • Demonstrative Pronouns
    When the Demonstrative Pronouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any demonstrative pronouns in the sentence.

  • Indefinite Pronouns
    When the Indefinite Pronouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any indefinite pronouns in the sentence.

  • Interrogative Pronouns
    When the Interrogative Pronouns option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any interrogative pronouns in the sentence.

  • Verbs
    When the Verbs option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any verbs in the sentence. This includes both helping verbs and main verbs.

  • Helping vs. Main Verbs
    When the Helping vs. Main Verbs option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify and distinguish between helping verbs and the main verbs in each sentence.

  • Adverbs
    When the Adverbs option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any adverbs in the sentence.

  • Words Modified by Adverbs
    When the Words Modified by Adverbs option is selected, Constructor will underline an adverb in the sentence and ask you if the selected adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It will also ask you to identify which word the adverb modifies.

  • Adjectives
    When the Adjectives option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any adjectives in the sentence. If the Include Articles with Adjectives question option is not selected, Constructor will ask you to identify only adjectives that are not articles. If this option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify all of the adjectives including the articles.

  • Words Modified by Adjectives
    When the Words Modified by Adjectives option is selected, Constructor will underline an adjective in the sentence and ask you to identify which word the adjective modifies.

  • Prepositions
    When the Prepositions option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any prepositions in the sentence.

  • Conjunctions
    When the Conjunctions option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any conjunctions in the sentence. If any of the more specific conjunction type questions are also selected, Constructor will sometimes ask you to identify the specific type of conjunctions and sometimes not.

  • Coordinating Conjunctions
    When the Coordinating Conjunctions option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any coordinating conjunctions in the sentence.

  • Subordinating Conjunctions
    When the Subordinating Conjunctions option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any subordinating conjunctions in the sentence.

  • Correlative Conjunctions
    When the Correlative Conjunctions option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any correlative conjunctions in the sentence.

  • Interjections
    When the Interjections option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any interjections in the sentence.

  • Subject
    When the Subject option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the subject of the sentence. Depending on the sentence options selected, the subject may or may not be compound. If there is more than one clause in the sentence, you will be asked to identify the subject in each clause.

  • Singular vs. Plural Subject
    When the Singular vs. Plural Subject option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify whether the subject of the sentence is singular or plural. Depending on the sentence options selected, the subject may be compound or not, and each subject item may be singular or plural. You should determine if the overall subject is singular or plural. If there is more than one clause in the sentence, you may be asked to identify whether the subject is singular or plural for any or all of the clauses.

  • Predicate
    When the Predicate option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the predicate of the sentence. Note that this refers to the simple predicate only (i.e, the verb phrase). If there is more than one clause in the sentence, you will be asked to identify the predicate in each clause. In addition, depending on the sentence options selected, there may or may not be a compound predicate.

  • Action vs. Linking Verb
    When the Action vs. Linking Verb option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify whether the predicate of the sentence includes an action or linking verb. If there is more than one clause in the sentence, you may be asked to the type of verb for each clause.

  • Object vs. Subject Complement
    When the Object vs. Subject Complement option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify whether the sentence contains an object or a subject complement. If the predicate is an action verb and this question is being asked, the sentence will contain a direct object and possibly an indirect object. If the predicate is a linking verb, the sentence will contain a subject complement (i.e., either a predicate nominative or a predicate adjective). If there is more than one clause in the sentence, you may be asked to identify whether there is an object or subject complement for each clause.

  • Direct Object
    When the Direct Object option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the direct object in the sentence. It may ask you to identify the simple direct object which includes only the noun or pronoun, or it may ask you to identify the complete direct object which includes any modifying adjectives. Depending on the sentence options selected, the direct object may or may not be compound. It could also be a phrase or clause such as a noun infinitive or noun dependent clause.

  • Indirect Object
    When the Indirect Object option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the indirect object in the sentence. It may ask you to identify the simple indirect object which includes only the noun or pronoun, or it may ask you to identify the complete indirect object which includes any modifying adjectives. Depending on the sentence options selected, the indirect object may or may not be compound.

  • Predicate Nominative
    When the Predicate Nominative option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the predicate nominative in the sentence. It may ask you to identify the simple predicate nominative which includes only the noun or pronoun, or it may ask you to identify the complete predicate nominative which includes any modifying adjectives.

  • Predicate Adjective
    When the Predicate Adjective option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the predicate adjective in the sentence.

  • Noun Object Complement
    When the Noun Object Complement option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the noun object complement in the sentence.

  • Adjective Object Complement
    When the Adjective Object Complement option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the adjective object complement in the sentence.

  • Noun of Address
    When the Noun of Address option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the noun of address in the sentence.

  • Appositive
    When the Appositive option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the appositive in the sentence.

  • Prepositional Phrases
    When the Prepositional Phrases option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any prepositional phrases in the sentence.

  • Prepositional Phrase Type
    When the Prepositional Phrase Type option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the function of a particular prepositional phrase. Prepositional phrases function either as adverbs or adjectives.

  • Words Modified By Prepositional Phrase
    When the Words Modified by Prep Phrase option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify which word or words a prepositional phrase modifies.

  • Prepositional Phrases and Infinitives First
    When determining the elements contained in a particular sentence, some people prefer to identify any prepositional phrases and infinitives first before identifying the subject and predicate. When this option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify these elements first, before asking about the subject and predicate. If this option is not selected, Constructor will first ask about the subject and predicate.

  • Infinitives
    When the Infinitives option in selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any infinitives in the sentence.

  • Infinitive Phrases
    When the Infinitive Phrase option in selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any infinitive phrases in the sentence. If the Infinitives option is also selected, it may ask you to identify the infinitives first and then ask you if they are also part of an infinitive phrase.

  • Infinitive Type
    When the Infinitive Type option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the type of any infinitives in the sentence. Infinitives may function as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs.

  • Adverb Noun Phrase
    When the Adverb Noun Phrase option in selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any adverb noun phrases in the sentence.

  • Gerunds
    When the Gerunds option in selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any gerunds in the sentence.

  • Gerund Phrases
    When the Gerund Phrases option in selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any gerund phrases in the sentence. If the Gerunds option is also selected, it may ask you to identify the gerunds first and then ask you if they are also part of a gerund phrase.

  • Participles
    When the Participles option in selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any participles in the sentence.

  • Participial Phrases
    When the Participial Phrases option in selected, Constructor will ask you to identify any participial phrases in the sentence. If the Participles option is also selected, it may ask you to identify the participles first and then ask you if they are also part of a participial phrase.

  • Type of Sentence
    When the Type of Sentence option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the type of sentence. It may be a declarative, interrogative, imperative, or exclamatory sentence. Note that this question will not be asked unless the sentence options allow more than one type of sentence to be used. If only one sentence type is allowed, this question option will be ignored.

  • Sentence Structure
    When the Sentence Structure option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the structure of the sentence. It may be simple, compound, complex, or compound/complex. Note that this question will not be asked unless the sentence options allow more than one type of sentence structure to be used. If only one type of sentence structure is allowed, this question option will be ignored.

  • Identify Number of Clauses
    When the Identify Number of Clauses option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the number of independent and dependent clauses in a sentence.

  • Highlight Clauses
    When the Highlight Clauses option is selected, and a sentence contains more than one clause, Constructor will ask you to identify one clause at a time in the sentence. It will then possibly ask you other questions about that clause, and then ask you to identify the next clause. If this option is not selected and the sentence contains more than one clause, Constructor will highlight the clause for you before asking questions about that clause.

  • Dependent Clause Type
    When the Dependent Clause Type option is selected, Constructor will ask you to identify the type or function of the dependent clause. It may function as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb.

  • Optional Items
    When the Optional Items option is selected, before asking you to identify various parts of speech or parts of a sentence, Constructor may first ask you if those elements exist in the sentence. They may or may not. If they do, Constructor will then ask you to identify the elements. This option affects every part of speech and part of sentence that Constructor may ask you about.
