Student and Teacher Comments on Shape Up: Geometry
A class of 5th grade students in Creswell, Oregon has been
using Shape Up: Geometry. Here's what some of them had
to say...
"This is cool how you can make your own puzzle. I bet
nobody can figure mine out." -- Austin
"This is hard, how do I move the shape?" "Oh I get it."
"Wow! I can do that in less moves."
-- Ryan
"I only missed one - I got it! I got it!"
-- Jocelyn
"Now I know my shapes." -- Emily
"I like how it tells you ways to identify shapes."
-- Marbella
And here's what their teacher had to say...
"At first the students didn't like the program. They
thought it was boring, but that was because the concepts
were too hard for them. Then, the students started
choosing it for their free time.
I found all of the games very useful with the multilevel
of abilities in my classroom. The aspects of the
applications I found to be the most useful were...
Identify - This really helped my students understand the
properties of shapes. Identify helped them realize that a
shape can be turned on its side, upside down, or reduced in
size and it still remains the same shape.
Catch Shapes - Was very useful to challenge students to see
if they really did understand and know their shapes.
Students began challenging each other to see who could
get the most shapes.
Transform - Challenged my higher level math students. It
helped them understand the concepts of rotation and
degrees.
Designs and Puzzles - Challenged my higher level math
students. Many of them got frustrated and were challenged
when they could not solve all the puzzles. For many, this
was a first."
