MathChamp! Overview

Welcome to MathChamp!

Ciggy the MathChamp! is here to help you practice your math. Ciggy can help you learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Our youngest friends can practice catching a matching number, and for those who are really ready to be challenged, they can have fun with fractions! The faster you go, the more points you'll earn. And depending on how many answers you get right, you'll have the chance to catch Bonzai the Bonus Hero to earn more equations and bump your score up even higher! See if you can make the high score list and track your scores for each type of game so you can see how you're improving as you get better and faster with MathChamp!

Getting Started

To start the MathChamp! application, select the MathChamp! icon from the Applications Launcher. This will display the MathChamp! main screen. On this screen, tapping on the Select A Game button will allow you to select which game you'd like to play. Once you are happy with the game you've chosen, select the Start button to begin a new game.

Game Controls

To choose which type of game you'd like to play or to see which one is currently selected, tap on Select A Game button on the main screen. This will bring up a Game Controls screen like the one shown here.

Using the Game Controls screen, select which type of game you'd like to play by tapping on the current game displayed under 'Which game shall we play?' This will bring up the list of games available. Choose between addition (Add'em Up), subtraction (Let's Subtract), multiplication (Multiplying), and division (Let's Divide). The Catch a Number game let's our youngest friends practice their pattern matching by choosing the number that matches the one displayed, and the Fun with Fractions game let's those who are ready for more of a challenge identify an equivalent fraction, percentage, or decimal value that matches the displayed fraction.

Along with choosing the type of game, you can also select how big you'd like the numbers of the equations to be. For practicing addition, subtraction, and multiplication, the first number will be in the range you select. The second will always be in the range from 1-10. For division and the fractions game, the numbers will always be kept in the small range, so there's no option for selecting larger numbers. You'll get more points for each equation when you use bigger numbers, so once you get comfortable with the smaller numbers, you might want to try the bigger ones to see how you do.

Finally, you can choose the number of equations you'd like to have in the game. More equations will mean you can get a higher score and potentially a longer bonus round so you might want to challenge yourself and see how high you can go!

Once you're happy with your choices for which game you'd like to play, select the OK button to return to the main screen.

Playing MathChamp!

To play MathChamp!, select the Start button from the main MathChamp! screen and you'll see a screen similar to this. You'll see an equation at the top and three boxes where Ciggy has a different answer on her back in each one. Your goal is to tap on the Ciggy that has the right answer. If you do, Ciggy will give you a big smile and show you how many points you got for that equation. The faster you answer the question, the more points you'll get, but be careful because if you don't guess the right one, Ciggy will just tell you she's sorry and you won't get any points for that problem.

While you're playing the game, you can watch the top right-hand corner to see how many points you've earned so far. Each time you guess an equation, the score will be updated so you can see how you're doing along the way.

If you need to take a break while you're playing, you can tap on the title bar or select the menu icon and you'll have the option to Pause or Stop the current game. If you pause the game, just select OK when you're ready to continue. If you want to stop the game, confirm that you really want to stop by selecting the Stop button, or choose Continue to cancel and keep playing.

The Bonus Round

After you finish the number of equations selected for the game, you may get to enter a Bonus Round to try to earn a few more equations to answer. For every three equations that you guessed right, you'll get one second in the bonus round. When you start the bonus round, Bonzai the Bonus Hero will appear on the screen. Your goal is to catch Bonzai as many times as you can by tapping on him. Each time you do, he'll show up in a different place. And each time you catch him, you'll get one more equation to answer which can make your score go even higher!

Scoring

When the game is finished, you'll see what your final score was. You can record your score by entering your name. If this is your first game, select the New Player button and enter your name. If you've played before, you can select your name from the list. The list can have up to eight players at a time. You can remove players if you need to, but removing a player will delete all of the scores stored for that person, so make sure you really want to before you do.

High Scores

From the main MathChamp! screen, you can view the high score list from the High Score option under the Scores menu. The high score list tracks the top eight scores since the last time the list was reset.

Player Scores

To see the scores for each individual player, select the Player Scores option under the Scores menu. Choose which player you'd like to see scores for and which type of game. MathChamp! stores the last 50 scores for each player and each type of game they play. The trial version of the application will only store the last 20 scores.

You can choose how you want to view the scores. The score table will show you a list of the number right, the number wrong, and the score of each game. It will also display a letter indicating what size numbers were used for that game. An 'S' is for small numbers, an 'M' for medium numbers, an 'L' for large, and an 'H' for Huge.

The graphs let you see how you're doing in a picture. You can choose to see a graph of your scores, or graphs of how many equations you guessed right or wrong. On color devices, you can also see a mixed graph of the number right and wrong together. The top color shows the number right and the bottom color shows the number wrong.

When you're looking at a graph that shows the number you got wrong, you may not see anything for some games. That probably means you didn't get any wrong for that game and means that you did a great job! If you want to check to make sure, you can look at the score table to see what it shows.

Trial Period and Registration

The trial period for the MathChamp! application lasts for 15 days, beginning when you first install the application on your device. You can use it for free during that time to see if you like it and want to keep playing. At the end of the 15 days, you must either:

  • pay the license fee and receive a registration code that will allow you to continue using the software, subject to the terms of the Software License Agreement defined below, or
  • discontinue use of the software

Feel free to make as many copies of MathChamp! and the documentation as you want and distribute them to your friends. Or better yet, just beam it to them. But make sure the copies aren't modified in any way and that you don't charge any fees or request any donations for doing so.

If you like MathChamp! and want to keep playing, you can purchase a license to use it at www.leadingstep.com. When payment is received, you'll be sent a registration code for the application. You should enter this code on the Registration form in the application, available from the Options menu on the main MathChamp! screen.

Using the MathChamp! application after the 15-day evaluation period isn't allowed, so make sure to either purchase a license or stop using the application.
