Shape Up Overview
Welcome to Shape Up: Geometry!
Do you know what a trapezoid looks like? How about a rhombus or
a right angle triangle? Or can you pick out a set of parallel
lines? How about recognizing similar or congruent shapes?
Shape Up can help you learn to identify these and other shapes
and shape properties. It also helps you learn
to visualize what shapes look like when they are rotated or
flipped and helps you learn to apply these transformations
to move shapes around.
Three kinds of games help you work on your shape skills. First,
Identify helps you learn to recognize various kinds
of shapes and shape properties. You pick out the shapes that
match from a group and Shape Up tells you
which ones you identified correctly, which ones were incorrect,
and which ones you missed. You can take as much time as you
need and review the definitions at any time.
Once you've gotten good at identifying the correct shapes and
properties, you can sharpen your skills even further by playing
the Catch game. Catch pops up various shapes on the
screen one at a time and you catch only the ones that match as
they go by. It starts out pretty slow, but don't be fooled.
Every round speeds up just a little more so you'll have to
really be on your toes to keep up! There are five color rounds
for each level and six levels over all. Can you become a
Shape Up master?
Transform is the last set of games and helps you learn to
visualize what shapes look like when they slide or are flipped
or rotated. You can work with just one shape to start or
try to solve the system puzzles that are provided. If you're
feeling really creative, you can create your own designs
and turn them into puzzles for you and your friends to solve.
Getting Started
To start the Shape Up application, tap on the Shape Up
icon from the Applications Launcher. This will display the
Shape Up main screen as shown here.
On this screen, you
can select one of the three types of games - Identify, Catch,
or Transform - or you can select the Controls or the Help list.
You can also access the main application menus.
These will allow you to do things like enter your registration
code, import new system puzzles, or view the totals for the
players or the puzzles. To access the menus, tap on the menu
icon or tap on the Shape Up title bar at the top of the screen.
Identify Game
The Identify game helps you learn to identify various shapes
and shape properties. From the main screen, tap on Identify
and then select whether you would like to identify shapes or
properties. Use the
Game Controls
to select which types of shapes and properties you want to
practice.
The Identify game will ask you to identify ten shapes or
properties in each game. It displays a direction at the top
of the screen indicating which type of shape or shape property
you should select along with six shapes at the bottom of the
screen. Your goal is to identify each shape that matches the
requested type or property. There will always be at least one
correct shape but there may be more, even as many as all six.
When you tap on a shape, a yellow border will indicate that the
shape is selected. If you change your mind, just tap on it again
to clear it. If you can't remember what a shape
or property looks like, tap on Remind Me at any time
to see some examples along with the definition.
Once you're happy with your selections, tap on Check My Answer.
For every shape you selected correctly, you'll see 'Got It!'
and for every shape that was incorrect, you'll see 'Oops!'.
You'll also see a yellow border around every correct shape
so you'll see if there were any shapes that you should have
selected but didn't. Once you've seen how you did, tap on the
Next button to identify the next shape or property.
After you've identified the ten shapes or properties, Shape Up
will show you how you did overall. It shows you how many
correct shapes there were along with how many you identified
correctly, how many you identified incorrectly, and how many
you missed. You can also choose to
save your totals
so you can see later how you're doing with recognizing
each type of shape and shape property.
If you need to stop a game in the middle, you can select the
Stop Game menu item. Either tap on the Identify title at the
top of the screen or tap on the menu icon and then select
Stop Game under the Options menu.
Catch Game
Once you're comfortable with identifying shapes and shape
properties, the Catch game will help you sharpen your skills
even more. To play, tap on the Catch button from the main
screen and then select whether you would like to catch
shape types or properties. Use the same
Game Controls as you do for Identify
to select which types of shapes and properties you want to
catch.
Before each round begins, you'll see a direction at the top
that tells you which shape type or property to catch. If you
can't remember what that type or property is, tap on Remind Me
to see some examples along with the definition.
On this screen, you'll also
see color swirls indicating which level and round you are on.
There are six levels with five rounds per level. The rounds are
indicated by different colors - red, green, blue, yellow, and
purple - and the number of swirls displayed indicates the level
you're on. If you get through all six levels, you're a
Shape Up master!
When you're ready to start the round, tap on the Go button.
Shape Up will begin to display shapes on the screen one at a
time. Your goal is to catch only the shapes that match the
indicated shape type or property. As you progress through the
rounds, the shapes will appear and disappear faster and faster,
so you'll have to move quickly to catch the right ones.
The goal of each round is to catch ten correct shapes and
when you've done that, the round ends. Be careful, though,
because if you catch ten incorrect shapes or miss ten that
you should have caught, the round will end and the game will
be over.
At the end of each round, you'll see how many correct shapes
there were, along with how many you caught correctly or
incorrectly, and how many you missed. When the game is over,
you'll also see how you did for all of the rounds combined
and will have the chance to
save your totals
so you can see later how you're doing with catching
each type of shape and shape property.
Again, if you need to stop a game in the middle, you can select
the Stop Game menu item. Either tap on the Catch title at the
top of the screen or tap on the menu icon and then select
Stop Game under the Options menu.
Transform Games
The Transform games help you to visualize what shapes look
like when you slide them or when they are flipped or rotated.
Tap on the Transform button from the main screen and then
select whether you would like to work with a single shape
or work with designs and puzzles.
Single Shape
When you work with a single shape, the system will select
a shape and then position an outline of that same shape
at a different location on the screen. Your goal is to
use different transformations - slides, flips, and
rotations - to move the shape into the outlined position.
Use the trigger at the top left of the screen to select
which action you want to apply to the shape (slide, flip, or
rotate). Once you've selected the action, you then specify any
additional information needed and when you're satisfied, you
tap on the Move button to actually move the shape.
For a slide, you specify which direction you want to slide
the shape and how far. Each point represents one unit in the
coordinate system. If you try to slide the shape further than
it can go in any particular direction, it won't move and you'll
get a warning instead. You'll need to adjust the parameters
and try again.
When you rotate a shape, you choose between various angles to
indicate how much the shape should be rotated. You can move
the shape in a positive direction (counter-clockwise) up to
180 degrees or in a negative direction (clockwise) up to
-135 degrees. This allows you to rotate the shape to any
45 degree increment of the full circle. If rotating the shape
would take part of it off the screen, you'll get a warning
and the shape will stay in the same location. You'll need to
slide it further over on the screen before you can rotate it.
The last transformation allows you to flip the shape. You
choose between any of six different types of flips that flip
the shape vertically or horizontally from the center point or
by one of the edges. Note that when you flip the shape by the
center, it flips based on the center of the rectangular area
that contains the shape, not based on the center of the shape
itself. For example, suppose you have an isosceles right angle
triangle. If you flip the shape vertically or horizontally,
the center point for the flip will be the middle point of the
long edge (the hypotenuse), not the center of the actual shape.
Again, if you try to flip the shape off the screen, you'll just
see a warning and the shape won't move.
The transformation is finished when you've moved the shape
into the outlined position. You'll see how many moves you
used as well as the minimum number of moves that could have
been used. As you get better at moving the shapes, you can
see if you can match the minimum number of moves.
You can restart the transformations from the original position
at any time by tapping on the Restart button. Or, if you want
to skip any particular shape transformation, you can tap on
the Skip button. After you've finished the transformation or
if you've skipped it, you'll have the opportunity to repeat
the same transformation again (for example, to see if you can
do it again using fewer moves) or move on to the next
transformation. When you're finished, just tap the Finished
button.
Designs and Puzzles
If you want to work with more than one shape, you can create
your own designs and puzzles, or try to solve a system
puzzle. From the main screen, tap on Transform and then tap
on Designs & Puzzles. This will take you to the Select Designs
& Puzzles screen where you will see a list of all the designs
and puzzles currently defined.
There are three types of items displayed in this list. First,
you can create a new design by tapping on the New button.
These items are identified by a 'D' for design. After you've
created a design, you can choose to have the system turn it
into a puzzle. Those items are identified by a 'P' for puzzle.
The last type are system puzzles and those are identified by
an 'S'. These are puzzles that are provided for you and
either come with the application or can be imported later.
You can see which puzzle or design is currently selected at
the top of the screen. To display the selected item, tap on
the Use button. Or, if you would like to create your own
design, tap on New. The Delete and Beam buttons also operate
on the currently selected design or puzzle and the Done
button will return you to the main screen.
New Designs
To create a new design, tap on the New button and an empty
transformation screen will appear. From there, you can
create new shapes for your design by tapping on the New
button. Additional screens will let you select the type of
shape you want, the size, and the color of the shape. By
default, the new shape type, size, and color will be the
same as the previous shape defined, as indicated by the
black border. Once you've selected these options, the new
shape will be positioned at the top left corner of the
coordinate system and you can move it wherever and however
you like.
The currently selected shape is indicated by a black outline
rather than the normal blue outline and all moves will apply
to that shape.
To slide the shapes of a design, you can either apply a
slide action as you did for a single shape, or you can tap on
the shape and drag it. You can also flip or rotate a shape in
the same way you did for a single shape by indicating the
action along with the angle or direction and tapping Move.
Each design can have up to sixteen shapes. If you want to delete
a shape, make sure it is selected, indicated by the black
outline, and then tap Delete. You can also modify the color
of a shape or move it to the front or the back using the
Shape menu items. To access the menu, tap on the menu icon
or the Create Design title bar at the top of the screen.
When you're finished with your design, tap on Done to return
to the Select Designs & Puzzles screen.
Creating Puzzles
After you've created a design, you can choose to convert it
into a puzzle by tapping on the Puzzle button.
The system will maintain an outline of the original
design shapes, but will scatter the shapes themselves to other
locations on the screen, creating a puzzle for you to solve.
After the system converts the design to a puzzle, you can
choose to modify it if you like. The system
will randomly scatter the shapes, but you might want to
position the them in different locations. If you do, select
modify and you'll have the opportunity to move them. You
won't be able to move the outline of the original design, but
you can move the starting position of the shapes.
While you are modifying a puzzle, you can move the shapes
around by tapping on them and dragging or you can apply the
normal rotate and flip actions. You can also reposition
the shapes to the front or the back using the Shapes menu items.
If you change your mind, you can also convert the puzzle back
into a normal design by tapping on the Design button. When you're
happy with the puzzle, tap on Done and you'll return to the
Select Designs & Puzzles screen.
Solving Puzzles
When you select a puzzle or a system puzzle from the Select
Designs & Puzzles screen, the system will display the puzzle
and again, your goal is to move the shapes into their outlined
positions. If there are multiple shapes of the same type and
size, but with different colors, it doesn't matter which color
pieces are placed into which outlined positions. The system
will keep track of how many moves it takes for you to solve the
puzzle and will track the results for you so you can try to
improve on the number of moves you use.
You can move puzzle pieces the same way you do when working
with a single shape. Note that when you are
solving a puzzle, you can't slide shapes by tapping on them and
dragging. You have to select the slide action instead so
the system can track how many moves it takes you to solve the
puzzle. It will count all of your moves using slides, rotates,
and flips.
At any time while you're solving a puzzle, you can tap on
Show Design to see what the original design looks like. You
can also tap on Restart to move all the shapes back to their
original starting positions or tap on Done to return to the
Select Designs & Puzzles screen.
Once all of the pieces of a puzzle have been moved into place,
the puzzle is complete. The system will let you know how many
moves it took you to solve the puzzle and you'll have the option
to update your totals so you can track your best moves for
each puzzle. The system will also track the best moves overall
for each puzzle so if more than one player is using Shape Up,
you can see what the best is and try to beat it.
Modifying Puzzles
For any puzzles that you have created, you can go back and
modify the puzzle to change the starting positions of the
shapes at any time. To do this, bring up the puzzle to
solve it, but then select the Modify Puzzle menu item under
the Options menu. While you're modifying the puzzle, you can
also choose to convert it back into a design again by tapping
on the Design button. Note that you can only modify puzzles
that you created. You won't be allowed to modify system
puzzles.
Game Controls
The Controls screen, like the one shown here, allows
you to select which shapes types and properties will be
used for the Identify and Catch games, and which types
of transformations will be automatically used by the system.
To select shape types, tap on the Shapes button to display
a list of shape groups. When the system chooses a shape
type for Identify or Catch, it will choose one of these
selected groups and will then choose one of the shape types
in that group. To see which shape types are included in a
group, tap on the group name. At least one group must be
selected at all times.
To select shape properties, tap on the Properties button
to display the list of properties. Select all of the
properties that you would like to practice. At least one
property must be selected at all times.
With transformations, the system will automatically apply
movements when working with a single shape or when converting
a design to a puzzle. It will always use slides, but you
can decide if it should also use flips and/or rotations
by selecting these options.
Shape Types and Properties
Shape Up helps you learn to identify a variety of shapes

Shape and Puzzle Totals
Recording Totals
When an Identify or Catch game is finished, Shape Up will
show you how many shapes you identified or caught correctly,
how many were incorrect, and how many were missed. You can
record these totals so you can see how you're doing overall.
You can also keep track of how many moves it takes you to
solve a puzzle so you can try to improve the next time.
When your first game is complete, enter your name in the
New Player field and tap on the New Player button. Your name
will be selected as the current player and displayed at the
player trigger. For every game after that, just select
your name from the player list if it isn't already selected.
Totals can be tracked for up to eight players at a time.
You can remove players if you need to, but removing a player
will delete all of the totals stored for that person, so make
sure you really want to before you do.
Player Totals
You can view totals from the menus on the main screen.
To see the totals for each individual player, select the
Player Totals item under the Totals menu. Choose which
player you'd like to see totals for and which type of game.
For shape types or properties, you'll see a list of each
type along with how many times you identified the shape
correctly, incorrectly, and how many you missed.
Puzzle Moves
For puzzles, you can view the number of moves it took you
to solve each puzzle. You can view the number of moves
for each player or view the best (lowest) number of moves
overall.
Importing System Puzzles
When Shape Up runs the first time, it looks for a database
of system puzzles and imports them into the application.
Every so often, there may be additional system puzzles
provided on the Leading Step website,
www.leadingstep.com,
and these can be imported into the application. To do this,
use HotSync to copy the new system puzzle database to your device
and then select the Import System Puzzles menu item under
the Options menu from the main application screen.
Trial Period and Registration
The trial period for the Shape Up application lasts for
15 days, beginning when you first install the application
on your device. You can use it for free during that time
to see if you like it and want to keep playing. At
the end of the 15 days, you must either:

Feel free to make as many copies of Shape Up as you want
and give them out to your friends.
Or better yet, just beam it to them. But make sure the copies
aren't modified in any way and that you don't charge any fees
or request any donations for doing so.
If you like Shape Up and want to keep playing, you can
purchase a license to use it at
www.leadingstep.com.
When your payment is received, we'll send you a registration
code for the application. You should enter this code on the
