Size It Up Overview
Welcome to Size It Up!
Learning to identify and compare numbers is fun with three
different games found in Size It Up. Whether you're learning
whole numbers, decimals, fractions, mixed numbers,
negative numbers, or even operations like addition and
subtraction or multiplication and division, you'll find plenty
of opportunities to sharpen your skills and have fun doing it!
First, the Arrows game helps you learn to compare the size of
numbers as you work to put them in order from smallest to
largest. New numbers appear and your goal is to shoot them
into the right place in line depending on their size. Choose a
particular type of number to focus on, such as whole numbers in
a specified range or decimals, or choose several types of
numbers and let Size It Up select one at random for each round.
See how many rounds you can complete as you place more numbers
in each round in less time.
The second game, Bricks, helps you learn to identify numbers
based on various commands. You may be asked to select the
smallest or the largest number, a number that falls within a
given range, a number with a given digit in a specified
place value, or any of a variety of other commands. Your
goal is to clear levels of bricks by using each of the
answers on the bricks to correctly match the commands.
Be careful, though, because if you choose an answer
incorrectly, that level gets blocked and can't be cleared.
Race against the clock to clear an increasing number of
levels in each round and continue on to the next.
Finally, the Numbers game presents a number using various
notations and you come up with the numeric version of the
number. For example, Size It Up may give you the written
form of the number or the expanded notation in straight or
random order. Practice whole numbers up to the millions, or
include up to three decimal places as you learn to
identify the right numeric values.
Getting Started
To start the Size It Up application, tap on the Size It Up
icon from the Applications Launcher. This will display the
Size It Up main screen as shown here.
On this screen, you
can select one of the three types of games - Arrows, Bricks,
or Numbers - or you can select the Controls or the Help list.
You can also access the main application menus.
These will allow you to do things like enter your registration
code, beam the application to another device, or view the
player totals. To access the menus, tap on the menu
icon or tap on the Size It Up title bar at the top of the screen.
Game Controls
The Controls screen, like the one shown here, allows
you to select which types of numbers you want to work with
and the range of those numbers.
You can choose to work with whole numbers from the hundreds up
to the millions. The range is defined by selecting the maximum
number number that should be included, from 999 up to
999,999,999. This option can also be set to 'None' to indicate
that whole numbers should not be selected.
Decimal values are chosen by selecting either common decimal
values or one place, two place, or three place values.
Fraction values are chosen by selecting common fractions,
or fractions with denominators in the range 2-10, or 2-20
and 100. The common values for both decimals and fractions
include the halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths,
and tenths values. Both the decimals and fractions options
can also be set to 'None'
to specify that they should not be selected.
The negative numbers option will apply to any of the other
number types selected. If selected, any of the ranges selected
for the numbers will include negative numbers in that same
range.
In order to select the mixed numbers option, you must have
already selected a whole number range and a decimal and/or
fraction range. Mixed numbers will be created using whole
numbers and decimals
or fractions as selected. If you want to specifically focus
on mixed numbers and not use whole numbers, decimals,
or fractions alone, check the Only box next to the mixed numbers
option and only mixed numbers will be used.
Finally, to use operations in the Arrows or Bricks games, you
can select the Add/Subtract option or the Multiply/Divide option.
The Adv (advanced) options apply to the Bricks game only.
If selected, the bricks commands will include some more
advanced, algebraic type equations.
Arrows Game
The goal of the Arrows game is to compare and order numbers
from the smallest to the largest. The numbers on the right
side of the screen are ordered from the smallest on the top
to the largest on the bottom. New numbers appear on the left
with an arrow on the side and your goal is to shoot the arrow
into the correct place in line according to where the new
number should go.
To place a new value in line, you shoot the arrow into
the gap between the numbers, or before or after the first or
last number. You can position the new number by dragging it
up or down and you can also move the line of
numbers using the scroll arrows at the bottom of the screen.
Once the arrow is lined up to the position you want it, tap
lightly on the number to fire the arrow.
If the arrow fits into the correct gap according to its size,
the number will be added to the line and a new number will
appear to be placed next. If you miss the gap, you'll see a
'Missed!' indication and again, a new number will appear.
If, however, the arrow fits into a gap, but is in an incorrect
spot, you will see a 'Wrong Spot' indication and the line at the
top of the screen will show you why that wasn't the right
location.
With each round, you must place an increasing number of new
items into the line correctly in a decreasing amount of time.
The number of items and time allowed for each round is
specified before the round begins. Once the round starts,
the number of items remaining to be placed is displayed by the
tokens at the bottom left of the screen and the time remaining
is indicated by the color bar at the top right. If the time
expires before you've placed all the items, the round times
out and the game is over. If you need to pause or stop
the game, you can use the menu items by tapping on the menu
icon or tapping on the Arrows title bar at the top of the
screen.
The clock continues to run while you line up new items
and shoot the arrows. If, however, you place an item into the
wrong position, the clock stops while the information is
displayed at the top showing why the position was incorrect.
This means you can take as long as you need to figure out why
the position wasn't correct and only continue when you're ready.
Once you tap the Next button at the bottom of the screen, a
new number will appear and the clock will continue.
Size It Up will select a different number type for each round
from among those specified by the controls. For most of the
types, the numbers are simply ranked by their size. However,
if either the Add/Subtract or Multiply/Divide options are
selected, you must determine the value of the expression and
then place the expression into the line according to that value.
As an example, consider the screen to the right. The new
expression, 11 + 7, has a value of 18. Since
10 + 7 equals 17, and 10 + 9 equals 19,
this new expression
should be placed between these two expressions. When operations
are used, all of the expressions in a round may use the same
operation
(e.g., addition) or may combine operations. Addition and
subtraction may be used together, or multiplication and
division may be used together, but these two groups will not
be combined.
Bricks Game
The Bricks game helps you learn to compare numbers and identify
them based on a variety of different commands, appropriate
based on the type of numbers. As each round begins, you'll
have six levels of bricks with a number or expression on
each one. At the top, you'll see one command at a time and
your goal is to select a brick that has an answer that
matches the command.
When you tap on a brick, if the number correctly matches the
current command, the brick will turn multi-colored and a new
command will be displayed. If, however, the brick you select
does not correctly match the command, an X will be drawn
across the brick and that level becomes blocked.
Some commands have only one correct
answer (e.g., "Select the smallest value below."), while others
may have multiple correct answers (e.g., "Select a value below
that has an 8 in the thousands place.").
When all of the bricks on a level
have been selected correctly, that level will disappear and a
new level will appear on top. Your goal is to clear the
specified number of levels for each round in the specified
amount of time. Be careful because once a brick is selected
incorrectly, that level becomes blocked and can't be cleared,
even if the other bricks on that level are answered correctly.
As with the Arrows game, the time remaining in the round is
shown by the color bar in the top right corner. The number
of levels remaining to be cleared is indicated by the tokens
on the left underneath the current command. Each round requires
one more level in less time, so you'll need to be quick to
get through them all!
If you select an answer incorrectly, the reason that it
doesn't match the command will be displayed at the top. The
timer stops while this is being displayed, so you can take
as much time as you need to understand why it wasn't right.
When you tap on the Next button, the next command will be
displayed and the timer will start again.
For each round, Size It Up chooses a particular type of number
to use based on the selected controls. If only one type is
selected, each round will use this same type, but if multiple
types are selected, Size It Up will choose one at random.
Each round ends when either the set number of levels have been
cleared successfully, or when the timer expires or all levels
become blocked.
Depending on the types of numbers used for a round, the
Bricks game includes commands such as:
the smallest or largest value;
the smallest or largest odd or even value;
the smallest or largest positive or negative value;
numbers with specified digits in particular place values,
including decimal places if appropriate;
numbers that are smaller or larger than a given value;
the smallest number greater than a given value;
the largest number smaller than a given value;
numbers that fall within a given range;
fractions with a given value in the numerator;
or fractions with a given value in the denominator.
When a bricks round uses operations, either addition and
subtraction, or multiplication and division, the commands are
given in the form of an equation. Size It Up may give you
and expression and you need to find the brick that has the
correct answer, or it may give you an answer and you have to
find a brick that has an expression that equals that value.
Many times the equations for the operations include an equals
sign. In these cases, you have to find the exact answer that
completes the equation. Other times the equation may contain
a less than or greater than sign (e.g., "7 * 8 < ____").
For these equations, you can select any number or expression
that will make the equation true.
If the advanced option is selected under the controls for
the operations, more advanced equation commands will be used
in addition to the basic ones.
These equations include algebraic type expressions. For
example, you may be asked to find a missing operand in an
expression (e.g., "4 * ____ = 36") or find an expression that
can replace an operand (e.g., "7 + 8 = 7 + (____)", where the
answer brick contains the expression "3 + 5").
You may also be asked to
find one equation that is equivalent to another (e.g.,
"55/11 = 50/10").
Numbers Game
With the Numbers game, your goal is to identify the numeric
equivalent of a value that is specified using a different
notation such as the written form of a number or the
expanded notation.
Before the game starts, you select which variation of
the game you would like to play. Digit Scramble will
show you the digits of the number in a scrambled form and
you put them in the correct order. Fill in the Blanks
shows you how many digits there are, but you have to fill
them in. And What's My Number? simply gives you a
blank line and you have to create the number completely on
your own. Each of these games allows you to ask for a hint
at any time to help you figure out the number. Or you
can play a fourth game, No Hints, where you're completely on
your own to figure out the number.
In addition to choosing which version of Numbers you'd like
to play, you also select how many questions you would like
and the notations to use. You can choose to use the written
form of the numbers, or the expanded or group notations. The
expanded notation adds the numbers by their place values as
in "1,000 + 300 + 80 + 7" and the group notation identifies
the numbers by their groups as in "1 thousand +
3 hundreds + 8 tens + 7 units". For both the expanded
and group notations, you can choose to display the number in
straight order according to the place values, or in random
order as in "80 + 1,000 + 7 + 300".
Once you've decided which options you'd like to use, tap on
the OK button and the game starts. The notation for a number
will be displayed at the top and your goal is to enter the
corresponding numeric version of the number. You can enter
the numbers using the keypad on the screen or using graffiti
characters. If you get stuck and need a hint, tap on the
Give Me A Hint button and SizeItUp will fill in the next
digit for you.
When you think you have the correct number, tap the Check
My Answer button and you'll see if your answer is correct
or not. Your answer will be displayed along with the correct
one so if it isn't correct, you can see what was wrong.
When you're ready, tap the Continue button and the notation
for the next number will be displayed, until the requested
number of notations have been displayed.
Player Totals
Recording Totals
Whenever you complete one of the games, Size It Up allows
you to select a player name and will store the totals
for that player. This helps you to see how you're doing
with each type of game and the different types of numbers.
To enter a new player, tap the New Player button and enter
the new name. Or, if the correct player name has already been
entered, simply choose the name from the player list.
Totals can be tracked for up to eight players at a time.
You can remove players if you need to, but removing a player
will delete all of the totals stored for that person, so make
sure you really want to before you do.
Viewing Player Totals
You can view player totals using the Player Totals menu from
the main screen. This will display the Player Total Options
screen. Select the player you'd like to see totals for and
which type of game, and then tap the Display button. For the
Bricks game, you have two options. You can view the
totals according to the type of numbers that were used or
according to the type of commands that were used.
For each game type, you'll see the number of right and
wrong answers for each category and range along with the
percentage correct. For categories that haven't been used,
you'll simply see zeroes. Answers for negative numbers are
tracked separately, so you'll also be able to see how you're
doing with negative numbers in the various categories.
For the Bricks Commands totals, you'll see how you did in
matching each type of command. Some of the commands are
used with more than one category type. For example, the
command to select the smallest value applies to all of the
categories except the operations. Other commands apply to
only certain categories. For example, the commands to select
the smallest or largest odd or even values apply only to the
whole number categories.
Each set of totals includes multiple screens to display the
various categories. Use the left and right arrows to move
between the screens, and tap the Done button when finished.
This returns you to the Player Totals Options screen so you
can display totals for a different player or different game.
Tap Done again from the Player Totals Options screen to
return to the main screen.
